Agri[culture]

Agri[culture] was a self-funded collective documentary project exploring the cultural and economic significance of agricultural shows in North East England (2018–2019). Born from the uncertainty surrounding Brexit and its potential impact on upland farming, the project sought to document these vital rural gatherings—not just as competitions or celebrations, but as spaces of tradition, resilience, and change.

Working as a collective, we embraced diverse perspectives, shaping a layered visual narrative that avoided both nostalgia and sensationalism. The work was exhibited in an unconventional format: a 12-foot cattle trailer, touring the 2019 show season to bring the images back to the communities they depicted. This approach encouraged direct engagement, with visitors contributing their own stories, photographs, and memories—turning the project into a living archive of rural identity.

Agri[culture] later extended into a visual dialogue across the Atlantic, connecting British and American rural experiences through an exhibition in Wyoming, USA. The project culminated in a publication launched in 2020
